Hi my name is Shaun Appler, Investigator with the Wrightsville Beach Police Department and on behalf of Expert Village, I am here to talk to you today about what to do when you are being stopped by the police.

I want you to pull over the side of the road or to the side of the park and later on the side street.  Once you have done that, remain in your vehicle.  Resist the urge to want to get out, and explain yourself to the Officer right away.  Don’t worry he is going to come up and talk to you.  Stay in the vehicle now unless the Officer tells you different.

Now we will cover that we will cover more about what you do after the Officer approaches in a second here but let me tell you first, if the Officer asks you to get out, he doesn’t need a reason, going to the Supreme court; he doesn’t need a reason to ask you to step out of the vehicle.  If you request that you do wait till he does, but if he does ask you step out go ahead and comply with the officer, the same goes for the passengers.  If the passenger is in a vehicle Supreme Court says an Officer can actually ask the passengers to step out and he doesn’t need a reason to do it.  Most of the times you will find that the officers are asking for safety issues so remember the same theme safety.

If you are on a busy highway and the Officer doesn’t feel comfortable standing on the side of your car where traffics going by because he may get struck by a passing vehicle, he is going to go ahead and ask you step out stand up to the side of the road.  So just remember stay in your vehicle until directed otherwise by the Officer and if the Officer does direct you otherwise, comply with what he asks you to do.
